Pamela Clark, a two time Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor, is a Portland resident. She has been surfing for three years, and will be featured in the Spring 2005 issue of Surf Life for Women magazine. In this article, the story of Pamela's bone marrow transplant and her continued surfing during and after the transplant is discussed.
Pamela was first diagnosed in August 2002, and her second reoccurrence was diagnosed in December 2003. Pamela had an autologous stem cell bone marrow transplant done at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, under protocols developed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
33 year old Pamela has lived in the Portland area with her husband and pound puppy for the past eight years. She surfs the Oregon coast year round, going out several times a week. She is helping to organize the 4th Annual Clean Water Classic surfing contest, which is a benefit event for the Surfrider Foundation. The Classic will take place on May 14-15th in Westport, WA. Pamela will also be participating in the 2005 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man/Woman of the Year contest, in which 10 Oregonians engage in a friendly competition for a two month period to see who can raise the most money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This contest starts on April 28th and concludes on June 23rd, 2005. More information on Pamela can be found at http://www.pamelaclark.info/ (after March 5th).
