Arthritis Drugs and Lymphoma Risk

The arthritis drugs known as TNF-blockers do not seem to markedly increase the chances of developing malignant lymphoma, according to the results of a Swedish study.

TNF is a natural inflammatory compound that was originally identified as an anti-tumor substance. While blocking TNF often greatly improves rheumatoid arthritis, there has been concern that doing so might allow cancers to develop.

Popular MS Drug Raises Leukemia Risk

The risk of developing leukemia as a side effect of a drug for multiple sclerosis (MS) is higher than previously reported. Mitoxantrone is an immunosuppressant drug approved by the FDA for treatment of several forms of advancing MS. It is one of only two drugs that has been shown to benefit people with secondary progressive MS who are having attacks. However, the drug can cause heart damage at high total doses. Due to this, the lifetime cumulative dose is equal to about eight to 12 doses over two to three years.

Muscadine Grape Skin Dietary Supplement Protects against Cancer Therapy Radiation Side Effects

Muscadine grape skin powder, from Muscadine Naturals, Inc, provided significant protection against radiation damage in an independent study conducted on mice. The finding was reported in April of 2009 at the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, in Denver, Colorado.

Smoking Risks Greater for Women

Women may be more vulnerable to the cancer-causing effects of smoking than men, research suggests. Scientists who studied 683 lung cancer patients found that women tended to be younger than men when they developed the disease. This was despite the fact that on average they smoked significantly less than men.
