A Link between Lymphoma and Celiac Disease?

An extensive recent survey of the Swedish cancer registry reveals that people with celiac disease face a 5-fold increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but that the risk has decreased by more than 50% over the last 40 years.



Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, and Sweden's Karolinska Institute recently undertook a review of more than 60,000 lymphoma cases diagnosed in Sweden between 1965 and 2004. They matched those cases to individual lymphoma-free controls with similar characteristics.

9/11 and Lymphoma Links?

As if being involved in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centers wasn't horrific enough, it's now appearing as if people present at the WTC on that world-changing day have higher than normal rates of lymphatic and blood cancers.


While New York city's health commissioner has said there is no evidence linking dust exposure to cancer, the Medical Monitoring Program reports a "handful of cases of multiple myeloma in very young individuals." They add, "multiple myeloma is a condition that ... almost aways presents later in life."


CDC & NCI Release US Cancer Incidence Report

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) recently published the Cancer Incidence and Mortality Data, a report that features the official federal statistics on rates of cancer incidence among the US population from 2001-2005.



The stats show that Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) is the fifth most common cancer to strike adults males, with an incidence rate of 23.0 per 100,000.

Lymphoma Cell Bank Announced

The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF)has just launched the very first Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) Cell Bank, a collection of various MCL cell lines created by scientists from all over the world. It was created to provide a single, centralized location where scientists can easily acquire high-quality, well-characterized MCL cell lines in an effort to accelerate discoveries in MCL. LRF is currently in the process of acquiring 15 different MCL cell lines. As additional cell lines become available they will be added to the Cell Bank.
