Golf Champion George Archer

Former US Masters golf champion George Archer, considered one of the best putters in the game's history, has died after a year-long battle with Burkitt's lymphoma, a form of NHL. Archer, who won the 1969 Masters by a stroke, was 65.

A 12-times winner on the PGA Tour, Archer died at his home in Incline Village, Nevada on Sunday, GolfDigest.com reported on its website.

His daughter, Elizabeth, became the first female caddie in Masters history when she carried his bag at the 1983 tournament.

World Lymphoma Awareness Day: September 15th

The World Lymphoma Coalition has proclaimed tomorrow World Lymphoma Awareness Day. Most of the events appear to be in Europe.

Is the cancer war being won?

Recently Fortune Magazine must have made its articles available to Google, as a search today revealed an article from a Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor back in 2004. Clifton Leaf wrote an extensive article on the Cancer War and, what I gather, little strides are being made (Thank Goodness lymphomas are one) but the greater war to include all cancers is hardly budging.

New Book Coming: Living With Lymphoma

When neurobiologist Elizabeth M. Adler was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, she learned everything she could about the disease, both to cope with the emotional stress and to make sure she made the best possible decisions for her treatment. In Living with Lymphoma, she combines her knowledge of lymphoma, scientific and personal, with the desire to help other patients come to grips with this complex, and often baffling, disease.

New Blog

Dave has added his chronicles about being a cancer patient on his blog. He was diagnosed this year with stage 3B Hodgkin's. I have double respect for him as he was doing the cruise ship gig - I travelled on several ships as a passenger during my days in Scandinavia and listened to many musicians on those voyages, not an easy life (well, having cancer isn't easy either, that much I know). Check him out.

Donations

I received a generous donation for the site today - thank you!

With all the devastation from Katrina, my family and I made a beginning donation to the Red Cross.

Update: United Airlines will give you 500 frequent flyer miles for a donation of $50 or more to one of three charities. If you are interested, see the United website. American Airlines is also offering 500 miles for Red Cross donations.

Our Hearts Go Out to Those Affected by Katrina

Hurricane Katrina, probably the largest natural disaster to hit the US, has devastated the US South coast and continues today to spawn storms as it travels towards our house and the US northeast. Tens, hundreds of thousands are without homes, millions without electricity.

Lymphoma Patient Missing in Kansas

A family is asking for help finding a 20-year-old man who disappeared Thursday. KMBC-TV and The KansasCityChannel.com are reporting that Keith Stallings borrowed his sister-in-law's car and dropped her off to work Thursday, but he has not been seen since. He has lymphoma and needs to take his medication.

Reviewing Books: Tapestry by Laurel Lee

With summer fading, I am getting to a number of lymphoma book reviews I have not had time to do.

Amanda Gee, Lymphoma Web Pioneer

Back in 1994, it was the wild west of the Internet. No Google, few pages of really good content, and a fair amount of what was online for medical information was in a non-web format called Gopher. It was in these days that Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor Amanda Gee, in England, started a website devoted to Hodgkin's. It was possibly the first, certainly it was the largest at the time with about 20 or so pages.
