Computer Woes

I think I posted awhile back that I had switched computers. I built myself a fairly modern Windows PC (fast, lots of memory, etc. I will spare you the geek speak). But from near the beginning it gave me the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" every now & then. I finally narrowed it down (I think) to overheating. A new CPU fan and two more case fans and it runs 30 degrees F cooler. Yeah!

But the machine remained unstable, crashing on random programs. Today I did a Windows repair install. So far so good, we'll see.

microRNA Linked to B-Cell NHL

Over the past few years, scientists have discovered that a new class of genetic regulators called "microRNAs" influences normal human growth and development. Now, researchers have found that microRNAs also play an important role in human cancer. The findings are published in this week's issue of the journal Nature (June 8).

Happenings

I like how the latest media is picking up on the effects of alcohol reducing lymphoma risk & the link between hair dyes and NHL. This site has had blog entries and information long before the vanity press makes them "popular". Don't let a sensationalist media outlet scare you - read the facts.

Lull in the News

After many days where there were two items of interest per day, we've seem to be in a lull. After ASCO, there were bound to be many reports. The lymphoma conference in Switzerland might produce a bit more. As always, I'll do my best to keep you informed. I'm touched as the number of hits on the blog has risen quite a bit. Hopefully that's due to the info being helpful. If you have ideas to share, click the comment link below.

Changes in AOL Lymphoma Chat

AOL has been going through some major changes, especially since being bought by Time-Warner. The latest is that AOL will no longer have volunteer hosts (aka Community Leaders) for their chats. As far as we know, the chats will remain intact. AOL has discontinued hosts' abilities to prevent disruption in a chat room. AOL's philosophy is that anyone can welcome people and control experiences in a chat.

9th International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma

The 9th International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma will take place in Lugano, Switzerland on June 8-11. The conference will deal with results and perspectives of basic as well as clinical research. Topics will include all lymphoid neoplasms, including multiple myeloma and CLL. Most lectures will be given by invited speakers. Selected controversial issues will be discussed by panels of leading experts. Small workshops will deal with key-problems in the field.

ASCO Meeting May 12-17

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting is this week. It is considered the premier educational and scientific event in the oncology (cancer treatment) community. The meeting in Orlando, Florida should be bigger than last year in New Orleans which attracted more than 28,000 attendees from all over the world.

Many lymphoma related studies and news releases will be released including information on Bexxar and Rituxan/MabThera.

Whiskey Prevents Cancer?

Drinking malt whisky may help prevent cancer, a scientific conference has been told. The medicinal properties of antioxidants in red wine are well known, but delegates at a biochemistry conference were told that whisky offered "even greater health benefits".

Quarterback Joe Ferguson

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Joe Fergeson was diagnosed with lymphoma last month. Ferguson, 55, is undergoing chemotherapy at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
