TANSTAAFL

A bit off the beaten path today. . . "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" or TANSTAAFL is a phrase that's been around maybe a century but popularized by author Robert Heinlein first in his novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress in 1966. If you "grok" (think about) it a bit, it can present an important life lesson...

Cool Videos

Cancer Together is a new non-profit which is developing a video library on the cancer experience.

What sets these apart are the views of patients. Very insightful.

Busy in the Bathroom

Sorry I have not written about cool or juicy tidbits this weekend - I was talked into redoing our main bathroom and I'm in the drywall phase. Does drywall mud cause disease? I hope not ;^)

Predicting Follicular NHL Aggressiveness

Scientists at the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) have created a model that predicts the survival of follicular lymphoma patients based on the molecular characteristics of their tumors at diagnosis. The model is based on two sets of genes, called survival-associated signatures, whose activity was found to be associated with good or poor prognosis for patients with the cancer. The scientists' results suggest that immune cells infiltrating follicular lymphoma tumors have an important impact on survival; both signatures came from such immune cells.

US Incidence Maps

When you cannot cure it, study it . . . One thing the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) has done since 1950 is plot the deaths from various cancers by US state. Thus, possible "hot zones" could be identified. I have my doubts as to the usefulness of this approach given modern molecular analysis machines, etc. I mean, would the CSI team look for crooks based on where they have committed a crime or by the lab analysis?

Celebrity Watch

Delta Goodrem sounds more like your doctor talking about your sleep patterns than the name of a successful actress and singer. In Australia, the UK, and other places worldwide, the 20 year old Ms. Goodrem is a star.

The US may see her soon. She is negotiating to star alongside ex-Baywatch star Brooke Burns and Charmedstar Shannen Doherty in the new TV series North Shore. The series is being touted as a cross betweenMelrose Place and the series Las Vegas but the commercials appear to be more like The OC.

Energy & Fatigue

One of the biggest blows to my whole lifestyle, both before and after chemo for lymphoma, was the fatigue (loss of energy). Sure, during chemo was the worst, with some days I was barely able to drag my butt out of bed. My wife was pregnant with our second at the time. The first time she thought she was having the baby I told her I couldn't make it I was so bad. Fortunately it was a false alarm and she was born the next week (my off chemo weekend) when I was able to get about.

The Lymphoma Coalition

I can truly say I ran across a surprise on the Internet lymphoma scene today. It looks like several of the lymphoma organizations worldwide have gotten together to create a meta-organization:

A Blue Day

I've come down with a virus again, it gets to my sinuses and I get achy all over. My wife had the same thing a couple weeks ago, maybe worse. It will pass but it's a disruption I could do without. Could be the rain falling the last couple of days does not help.

I find now that when I fly, I tend to get sick afterwards. Maybe it is the altitude plugging my head up, probably more like travelling disrupts my body rhythms. My digestive system is most affected. My tummy is still tender after all this time.
