Tell Your Story

”I was diagnosed two years ago with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Boy, does news like that ever change your life and your outlook on what is really important!I have now been in remission for almost two years, and I'm thrilled to say that two months ago I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Grace. I also am happy to say that only 10 months after completing chemo I walked all 60 miles of the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk.” Mary, age 42

Lymphoma and Relationships

A cancer diagnosis is one of the worst things a person may hear in their lifetime - the stress, uncertainty, fear. Once they become better educated, by sites like this one, by their medical team, reading, etc. they can overcome the negative thoughts and focus on the fight against the cancer and the goal of achieving remission.

The cancer experience can bring families together - look at the last two posts where families & communities are coming together to help lymphoma patients.

Lucy Jamie, 88, of Hollywood Florida, was recently diagnosed in the advanced stages of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and has endured four months of chemotherapy.

Football Coach Tackles Lymphoma

Today I read a very good article from the Delaware State News I thought you'd like.

Dwayne Thomas was coaching at Tenessee State back in 2002 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Starting chemo, he never missed a practice, stating "When you take those treatments, you are down. Psychologically, I didn't want to give in to the disease."

Happy Father's Day

When you are facing a rough time, even a very rough time like fighting lymphoma, it helps to focus on one or more goals. Many people focus on their fight. But it doesn't hurt to also have some external goals to work towards.

At the time of my treatment, I had a small daughter and another on the way. I had a focus for my fight - to see my children grow up - for them to know me, and I to know them. Others have told me they have also set goals or kept a focus on something close to their heart to continue the fight.

Classmates of Hodgkin's Kid Shave Heads

Last month, 10-year-old Josh Housley was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Josh is at home fighting cancer and undergoing aggressive chemotherapy.

His classmates in the fourth-grade at Grassland Elementary decided they wanted to help Josh through this difficult time, so all the male students went on a field trip to the barber shop. Although Josh can't enjoy time with his friends, he's not too far from their thoughts. Since Josh has lost his hair because of chemotherapy, they decided to save their heads to support him.

Young Gives Jersey to Hodgkin's Kid on Draft Day

New Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young didn't hold onto his draft day jersey for long.

He quickly passed it on to a 12-year-old fan.

Houston Texans linebacker coach Johnny Holland asked Young to visit with Archie Taylor Jr. The 12-year-old was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in December.

Young autographed the jersey and called the meeting "a blessing."

Helping the Helpers: Aiding Cancer Caregivers

During any given year, an estimated 50 million people provide care for an extended period to a loved one with diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and, increasingly, cancer. In the latter case, researchers have now documented not only the extent of the duties these "informal caregivers" provide, but also the hefty emotional and physical toll it can take on them.

Hodgkin's Boy Meets Hockey Legend (and fellow lymphoma survivor) Lemieux

Mitch Konkle, a 9-year-old from Michigan, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in June. One thing that’s kept him fighting is the knowledge that his hero, Lemieux, battled and beat Hodgkin’s disease. Konkle got a special treat courtesy of NBC’s television show "Three Wishes." The inspirational series, starring Amy Grant, helps hopes and dreams of deserving people across America come true. The segment involving Konkle and Lemieux aired last night.

When a Lymphoma Patient is Friends with Jerry Garcia

Noted guitarist Perry Lederman and Grateful Dead great Jerry Garcia met in the Berkeley, California, folk scene in the early 1960s. When a fire destroyed Lederman's home in 1979, Garcia gave him the Byrdland guitar at right so he would have an instrument to play. They stayed in touch, and around 1992, when Garcia sent Lederman documentation about his previous ownership of the guitar, he also contributed to Lederman's medical bills after he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
