The Stress of Cancer: Seeking Support

This week's article in coping with lymphoma is The Stress of Cancer: Seeking Support. Learning that you have a diagnosis of cancer is usually a traumatic experience. And following the shock of diagnosis, people have to face treatment decisions and side effects, changing personal relationships and uncertainty about their future. The resulting stress can complicate an already serious situation.

Trump Helps Kid with Hodgkin's

Breaking news out of that bastion of news bureaus: Access Hollywood! They report that Donald Trump, the US Multimillionaire and TV presonality with "The Apprentice", accepted a Make-a-Wish request for a child with Hodgkin's Disease (lymphoma). The child wanted to go to Trump's board room - Trump met him with his staff, talked, sent him out then invited him back in. Instead of firing him, he presented a check, amount unspecified, noting he should put that in the bank. Then instead of "You're Fired" he told him "You're Hired!" The child was all smiles.

Life After Lymphoma

With treatment effectiveness on the rise, there are a growing community of lymphoma survivors. But what does it mean when the oncologist says "you're in remission"??

That's when the worry can set in. There are ways to cope with all the questions. There is information here in the After Lymphoma section. Also MD Anderson has an excellent website I recommend.

High School Football Player Tackles Hodgkin

Patrick Schmiedt writes today in the Casper Star Tribune about 18 year old Brody Knell. Diagnosed at age 12 with stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma, it had spread to his lungs and abdomen. After chemotherapy and radiation, he has been cancer free for five years. He's now a star football player with a bright future.

An inspirational article I highly recommend.

Southeastern coach lymphoma free

Southeastern Louisiana college football coach Dennis Roland, 49, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in May, says he has been told that he's cancer-free. "I've got two more rounds of treatment that I had been mentally putting off," said Roland, "But now I know I can go in and knock them off."

New Lymphoma Information and Fundraising Campaign

Genentech, LLS, and some US National Football League (NFL) players/former players are banding together in a new campaign to raise lymphoma awareness. Center in the campaign is former Pittsburg Steeler Merril Hoge, diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 38.

They plan to take the campaign on the road, visiting several cities (currently not around my place - yet).

British soccer star Lee Maddison was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) last year. The 32 year old Gretna defender is a former Carlisle United favorite. In January he had a successful bone marrow transplant (BMT). The marrow came from his brother who was a perfect match (chances for a match from a sibling are one in four). Lee says "I was very lucky that I had my brother but I was the only person on my ward who had a sibling as a match."
