Hodgkin's Pro Bowler Picks up ESPY Award Last Night

Carolina US Football linebacker Mark Fields picked up an ESPY Award for best comeback Wednesday night before he begins treatment for a recurrence of Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"This will be some inspiration," Fields said, holding his trophy.

He will start a round of chemotherapy Thursday at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona and will miss the upcoming NFL season. "My intentions are to come back again. If you're going to get cancer, this is kind of the one to get. It's quite devastating, but all you can do is keep pounding," he said.

Update: Andre' Singleton

In 2 previous blogs we followed Andre' Singleton and his achieving remission from Hodgkin's.

He traveled to Washington, D.C., to volunteer in CureSearch’s national conference. He went to New Jersey to meet the three Newark doctors. While there he saw his story told in the local newspaper. He had his picture taken with Bill Cosby.

Lymphoma Survivor: Actor Gene Wilder

I recently became aware that actor Gene Wilder was a lymphoma survivor. It is widely known his former wife Gilda Radner died of cancer (not lymphoma). Gene was diagnosed in 1999 of what he called a "unique form of Non-hodgkin's lymphoma". He had treatment & a stem cell transplant and now is in remission. He remarried and is living life the way he wants.

Patient Spotlight: Dan Wheeler

Either the Connecticut media is covering alot more lymphoma patients or there is a mini outbreak. Today's survivor story comes out of the Connecticut Post and is the story of Dan & his fight against Hodgkin's Lymphoma and reaching remission. You can find the article here.

On the computer note, so far, so good, e-mail back, Office back. Down to 512MB due to the bad module, hope that is rectified soon. That might free up enough time to get a scanner connected for the family....

Another Connecticut Fundraiser for Teacher with Hodgkin's

And I thought community dinners were a Minnesota thing ;-)

Friends are rallying around Ericka Banhan, a longtime Bethlehem, CT resident employed as a part-time Middle School secretary. Ericka is the wife of self-employed painter Ozzie Banhan and the mother of Alexis, 14, entering her sophomore year in High School, and Brooke, 9, who just completed third grade.

Ericka was diagnosed in April with Stage IV Hodgkin's lymphoma. She has no health insurance.

Childhood Hodgkin's Survivor Studies to Become a Pediatric Oncologist

21 year old Ethan Helm of Mabelvale, Arkansas has a dream: to become a pediatric oncologist (a children's cancer doctor) to help people affected by Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Ethan knows alot about Hodgkin's as he was diagnosed at age 15 with cancer.

Picture-Perfect Competition for Lymphoma Awareness

To raise awareness of the disease and to mark Worldwide Lymphoma Awareness Day on September 15, the patient support group, Lymphoma Support Ireland (LSI), has launched a competition for amateur photographers. Entitled 'Beacons of Hope', the competition aims to encourage members of the public, especially those who have been touched by cancer, to represent their 'beacons of hope' through photography.

Katie Remains Ward of the State of Texas!

The saga continues: a judge ruled Thursday that the state of Texas will retain custody of 13-year-old Katie Wernecke, who was taken from her parents after they questioned the need for radiation after chemotherapy. Her chemo had apparently brought her into remission from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was later found that the cancer had indeed returned.

Katie will remain with Child Protective Services pending another hearing late next month, juvenile court Judge Carl Lewis ruled. Katie was scheduled to see doctors at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on Thursday.

Pro Fisherman Now Fights Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Pro fisherman Jarrett Edwards had the world by the tail, or rather, fin, until learning this spring that he had a form of cancer. Edwards, 25, was in his fourth season on the CITGO Bassmasters tour when doctors discovered a tumor the size of a fist and a half beneath his left collarbone. He was eventually diagnosed as having Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

"It was totally unexpected," said Jerry "Bubba" Puckett, the editor of a Arizona-based fishing magazine. "One minute he's on the national tour, and the next minute he's in Denver being operated on."

7 year old with lymphoblastic lymphoma

In July 2004, DaQuan McDaniel, a third grader was diagnosed with Stage 2 lymphoblastic lymphoma, but in a round about way. DaQuan’s mother, Cheri, says her son sprained his ankle the previous December, while playing basketball. If not for that injury, she believes, DaQuan’s lymphoma would not have been diagnosed so early.

She advises other parents to “pay attention to your kids. It’s a good thing we had him in basketball, because if he hadn’t sprained his ankle, we never would have known about the cancer” in time.
